West Nile Virus in Tazewell County

The Tazewell County Health Department (TCHD) has confirmed West Nile virus in a batch of mosquitoes tested May 27, 2016.  The mosquito batch was collected in Pekin earlier in the week.

“Take precautions to protect yourself by wearing insect repellent and getting rid of standing water around your home,” said Melissa Goetze, Environmental Health Supervisor.  “West Nile virus is present in Illinois every year.”

West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a Culex pipiens mosquito, commonly called a house mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird.  Common symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches.  Symptoms may last from a few...

SPRINGFIELD – May 20, 2016--Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Director Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D. today confirmed one case of measles in Illinois.  A visitor to Illinois from out of the country became ill last week and tested positive for measles.  This person is no longer infectious.
